Periodontal - Gum Disease

Gum disease starts out as inflammation or bleeding and swelling of an area of your gums caused by bacterial plaque.  Tartar, or Calcium Phosphate salts from your salivary glands cause a precipitation of this hard mass on and bellow your tooth crown into the root area.  This then is an area where bacterial plaque can hold on to to cause the inflammation that is associated with gingivitis and periodontitis.

It is usually not found, at first, throughout your mouth.  It is usually caused by poor oral hygiene.  We also know today that their is a genetic predisposition to gum disease.  If your mother or father lost their teeth early in life, it can be expected to be due to gum disease that has progressed from Gingivitis to Periodontitis.  Periodontitis causes bone loss around a tooth or teeth and can spread quickly if the gum pockets are deep and are unable to be cleaned properly.  Systemic disease such as diabetes can and does contribute to this entire process.  Other systemic diseases can also contribute.  This is the reason that your dental professional must review your medical history.

Gum disease often starts out as plaque, an opaque film on the teeth that hardens to form tartar. As tartar accumulates, it harbors bacteria that attack the soft tissue around the gums and also initiates an autoimmune response from your immune system that attempts to rid the area of the infection.  This adds to the bone loss process. This is the early stage of gum disease known as Gingivitis. Left untreated, Gingivitis becomes Periodontitis which ultimately destroys the tissue surrounding your teeth AND the bone that holds your teeth in place. Except for bad breath and gums that bleed, there are very few early warning signals. The disease advances silently, often without pain, and before you know it, you are feel lose teeth and you begin losing your teeth.

Tooth loss is only the most obvious indicator of gum disease. Scientific research has discovered linkage between gum disease and stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and even an increased risk for low birth weight children for pregnant women. When your gums become diseased, your entire immune system is weakened.

The disease is multi-factoral and your dentist must review both the clinical and medical condtions of a patient to decide on the correct course of treatment.
