Osseous - Bone - Grafting & Guided Tissue Regeneration

Osseous surgery is a procedure that reshapes the bone which holds your teeth in place. Osseous surgery commonly treats moderate and severe periodontitis.

Patients with periodontitis experience defects in the bone around their teeth. The osseous surgery removes those defects. Prior to the surgery, the patient undergoes a periodontal treatment that consists or scaling and root planing.  A local anesthetic can be administered to minimize the pain, but is often not required for this presurgical procedure (See Scaling & Root Planing).

Once the roots are cleaned, the dentist uses a drill and sharp dental tools to reshape the bone surrounding the teeth. Depending on the extent of the defects, the deformed bone is removed, and the rest is shaped. Bone grafting material is used where the defects are too large to be treated with only reshaping. Once the bone surrounding the teeth are back to their original state, the gums are stitched back into place.

Osseous Grafting is a routine procedure, with a high success rate.  There are quite a few different bone grafting procedures with different bone products such as Freeze Dried Demineralized Cortical & Medullary Bone.  We also use your own blood to creat barrier materials like Platelet Rich Fibrin.  We also commonly use absorbable collagen to prevent loss of the bone substitute and to keep soft tissue from growing into the surgical site.

People who smoke must be particularly careful when doing bone  grafts and soft tissue surgery since the tissue does not respond well and has trouble healing after all dental surgical procedures, especially bone grafts!  Please do not plan to smoke for 3 weeks following many implant or bone grafting surgeries.
